Piercings and MRI? Do you have one or more piercings and need to have an MRI ? Have you been told “it can’t be done”? Or are you panicking at the thought of having to remove everything?
👉 In this article I will explain when a piercing is a problem , what to do to avoid risks and how to avoid unnecessary damage .
🔬 Piercing and MRI: why are there risks?
MRI uses very strong magnetic fields to obtain internal images of the body. All metals (even very small ones) can:
move
to overheat
interfere with the test result
This is why you are asked to remove metal objects such as watches, glasses… and yes, even piercings .
📍 Should I remove my piercing before the MRI? It depends.
✔️ Location matters
If you need to have an MRI on:
Head, neck or jaw → you need to remove nose, lip, tongue, ear piercings
Chest or Breast → Remove Nipple and Chest Piercings
Abdomen or lower back → often require removal of the belly button piercing
Lower/upper limbs → in many cases it is not necessary to remove them, but it is better to ask
✔️ The material makes the difference

Medical grade (implant-grade) titanium is
considered one of the safest metals because it is not ferromagnetic , so in many cases there is no need to remove the jewel.
Be careful instead of:
Cheap or non-certified steels
Jewellery with decorations, crystals or mixed metal inserts
⚠️ Even if the material is “safe”, it could still alter the image of the exam . For this reason, many centers ask to remove them anyway.
🛟 Have a recent piercing? Don't remove it yourself
If the piercing was recently done, removing it yourself is a real risk : you could cause infection, inflammation or the hole closing up.
✅ Recommended solution: use a retainer in bioplast or PTFE , non-metallic materials suitable for resonance (but always with prior medical approval).
📋 Quick checklist before MRI
Contact the center and ask if you can keep your piercing
Check what type of exam you need to do and in which area
If possible, remove jewelry early and hygienically.

👨⚕️ Piercing and resonance: never underestimate the experience of the professional

Every body is different, every piercing is different. For this reason, relying on a professional piercer can make the difference. Not only to remove a jewel correctly, but also to provide documentation on the materials used (often requested by doctors).
