Piercings and the sea: how long should you really wait before swimming?

With summer just around the corner, this is undoubtedly the most frequently asked question we receive:
👉 “If I get a piercing… how long should I wait before going to the beach or pool?”
That's a very good question.
And the answer isn't "it depends"... but it needs to be explained well.
After over 13 years of experience in the industry, we can tell you one thing with certainty:
👉 the problem isn't going to the beach... but soaking the piercing you just got.
Let's see everything in detail.
🌊 How long after the first bath can I swim in the sea?
In general:
👉 You must wait at least 10 days before immersing the piercing in seawater.
This is because the piercing is, for all intents and purposes, an open wound in the first few days.
Although the sea is often seen as a “natural disinfectant”, it actually contains:
bacteria
sand
microorganisms
which can irritate or infect the newly pierced area.
🏊 Pools, spas, lakes: why do we have to wait longer?
For all other waters:
👉 Swimming pools, spas, lakes and rivers → minimum 20 days
Here the risk is even higher because:
the pool contains chlorine and chemicals
lakes and rivers have stagnant water and bacteria
spas can be more aggressive for the skin
👉 In these environments, a fresh piercing is much more exposed to complications.
☀️ Can I go to the beach without swimming?
Yes, absolutely yes.
And this is where many get confused.
👉 After 2 days you can already go to the beach or the pool... but without submerging the piercing.
So you can safely:
sunbathe ☀️
stay on the beach 🏖️
walk in the water (without wetting the piercing area)
relax normally
💡 Practical example:
Did you get a belly button piercing?
You can go to the beach after 2 days, but no full bath.
👂 What about ear piercings?
Here is another important point:
👉 You don't have to wait 10 days to "go to the beach".
If, for example, you have had an ear piercing:
you can go there even after a few days
just avoid immersing your head in water
👉 So no diving, no scuba diving.
The concept is always the same:
do not get the piercing wet in the first few days.
⚠️ Watch out for the sand
An often overlooked detail:
👉 Sand can irritate a fresh piercing.
The grains can:
enter the forum area
cause annoyance
increase the risk of inflammation
What if it happens?
👉 Don't panic:
Rinse gently with clean water and continue normal care.
💎 What about microdermals? Does anything change?
A question we often get is about microdermals (dermal anchors).
👉 The answer is simple:
The timing is exactly the same as for other piercings.
So:
🌊 Sea → 10 days before immersing the area
🏊 Pool / spa / lakes → 20 days
☀️ Sun → already after 2 days, always avoiding direct contact with water
💡 The main rule applies here too:
It's not where you go, but whether or not you submerge the piercing.
However, since it is a type of piercing “anchored” under the skin, the microdermal can be slightly more delicate in the first few days.
👉 This is why it is even more important:
avoid collisions
avoid chafing
be careful of sand and dirt
☀️ Sunscreens, tanning lotions, and protection: what to really do
Another very common mistake concerns the use of:
sunscreens
tanning oils
tanning products
👉 In the first 7-10 days it is best NOT to apply these products directly to the piercing.
This is because:
they can irritate the newly pierced area
they can block the hole
increase the risk of inflammation
👉 After the first week you can start using them again, but always with caution.
🚿 After the bath: the simple thing that really makes a difference
This is advice that few people give, but it makes a big difference.
👉 For the first month of the piercing's life, every time you bathe (sea or pool):
before you get out in the sun…
👉 rinse the area with clean water (non-salty and non-chlorinated).
Nothing complicated is needed:
even just a glass of water poured over the area is enough
💡 This small gesture helps to:
reduce irritation
keep the area cleaner
promote a more peaceful recovery
Afterwards you can relax and sunbathe without worries.
🧠 Quick summary (save it)
To avoid confusion:
☀️ Sun / beach: after 2 days → OK
🌊 Sea (diving): after 10 days
🏊 Pool / spa / lake: after 20 days
💎 Microdermal: exact same timing
🚫 In the first few days: never immerse the piercing
🧴 Sunscreen: Avoid on the piercing for 7-10 days
🚿 After bathing (for 1 month): always rinse with clean water
💬 Conclusion
As you've seen, you don't have to give up summer to get a piercing.
You just need to be a little careful in the first few days.
And yes… you probably thought worse 😉
